Gillard Announces Leadership Ballot

Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced a leadership ballot within the Australian Labor Party at 10am this coming Monday, following Kevin Rudd’s resignation as foreign minister.

The announcement was triggered by growing pressure from Kevin Rudd and his supporters within the Labor party, who believe he has a better chance of beating Tony Abbott at the next election.

Ms Gillard has said that she will rule out a future challenge and pledge her support to the elected leader if she loses the upcoming ballot, and has urged Mr Rudd to do the same.
