The Cool Kids – When Fish Ride Bicycles

Having a name as pretentious as The Cool Kids can be seen as setting the bar awfully high, fortunately, the laidback Chicago duo justify their moniker on this tightly-crafted debut album. Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks, the ‘Cool Kids’ in question, are in fine form alongside the likes of Ghostface Killah and Bun B. Although the conversational delivery can at times feel mundane and pedestrian, Inglish and Mikey manage to find just the right blend of mellow braggadocio to keep the audience on side. The duo’s unique minimalistic approach (that made breakout track Black Mags such a hit) is once again present, albeit with greater shades of The Neptunes peppered across a number of the tracks. Despite being tailor-made for summertime in Chicago, When Fish Ride Bicycles still warrants a serious listen and should feel more at home in your collection when the thermostat hits its heights come December.

Highlights: Summer Jam, Sour Apples, Penny Hardaway
