Pharoahe Monch – W.A.R.

Idris Elba’s chilling opening sets the scene for what is both a thought provoking and refreshing hip-hop album. Pharoahe’s trademark complex, multi-syllabic lyricism is at odds with the monotonous drivel that has plagued hip-hop since the turn of the millennium. However, instead of selling out on this latest record, Pharoahe rails against the mainstream that many soulless MCs strive to please. Pharoahe denounces the myopic media, materialism, and instant gratification in a standout album that solidifies his status as one of our generation’s brightest hi-hop luminaries. Whilst not up to the lofty standards set by his preceding album Desire (a masterpiece in its own right), W.A.R is still a solid entry in Pharoahe’s critically acclaimed discography.

Highlights: Calculated Amalgamation, Still Standing, Clap
