The Ecstatic Mos Def Hits Adelaide

Critically acclaimed hip-hop icon and outspoken left-field activist Mos Def has announced The Ecstatic Tour, a move that will see him play in Adelaide for the first time.

Def’s first and “only ever” headline Australian tour bears the name of his June ’09 album which has been lauded as the seventeenth best album of 2009 by Rolling Stone and earned him a 2010 Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album.

1999 saw the release of the Brooklyn rappers first album Black on Both Sides, followed by The New Danger in 2004, True Magic in 2006 and The Ecstatic in 2009.

The charismatic rapper, actor and poet has been imperative in the revival of conscious hip-hop, popularized by Public Enemy and De La Soul in the late 80s. His intelligent and socially aware lyrics are a breath of fresh air in a genre that is being increasingly inundated with mundane and generic ‘gangsta’ rap.

Particularly through Black Star, Def’s collaboration with Talib Kweli, he has focused on the negativity and violence often associated with rap music and the vilification of African Americans in society.

Despite significant mainstream success, Mos Def remains well respected by all, from the underground fan bases to the major players in the industry. Kanye West cites Mos Def as his ‘spiritual advisor’ and a key contributor to the success of his recent work, “Mos helped me find the ‘old me’ lyrically.”

Since the turn of the millennium, the Brooklyn born lyricist has established himself as a strong acting talent, a feat achieved by few. Critics in particular have praised his performances in 16 Blocks, Monster’s Ball, The Italian Job, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Something The Lord Made.

Mos Def will be playing January 11th at HQ, with tickets available through Venue Tix.
